The 10 Biggest Mistakes in Affiliate Marketing

I know that it’s probably hard to believe that anyone can create an income through affiliate marketing but this is one time on the Internet where this is actually true.

Why you don’t hear success story after success story however, is because some people make some very big mistakes when getting into affiliate marketing. Below you’ll find the top 10 biggest mistakes that affiliates make and how to avoid them.

Study them and learn how to avoid them. It could make the difference between pennies and huge profits in your affiliate marketing campaigns.

  1. Believing that people will just magically click on your affiliate links. Although an affiliates job is not to “sell” it IS an affiliates job to “pre-sell” and this entails more than just simply displaying a link on your site. It also entails encouraging people to click on that link by talking about the different benefits that can had by purchasing the product. You can give first-hand accounts or favorable recommendations about the product or service. Another incentive is also to provide an offer that entices the readers to check out the product.
  2. Believing that simply because you have a website, people will come. While organic traffic (that is traffic that you don’t have to pay for) is possible to achieve, it takes a lot of work and dedication on your part. Just because you have a website doesn’t mean that people are magically going to show up. You need to make that happen and this can be done through effective SEO (search engine optimization) techniques, or simply by buying traffic.
  3. Believing that one marketing strategy is enough. Some affiliates are under the impression that simply because you submit an article to an article directory, that you all of sudden will get all of the traffic you need. When you limit yourself to one tactic, you are missing out on tons of additional traffic that can be found elsewhere. You also fail to tap into other markets for your product.
  4. Not paying attention to your marketing performance. Most affiliates are concerned with one thing only and that’s how much money they’ve earned that day. If they happen to see that they aren’t making as much as they expected, instead of simply adjusting their tactics and trying to fix the problem, they give up completely. It’s important to understand things like how many people are visiting your site, how many of them are unique, how many come back, how much time they’re spending there and so on.
  5. Failing to find an affiliate program which offers products that people actually want to purchase. Some affiliate programs may offer as much as 95% commissions on their product but if their product is below par or virtually impossible to sell, you’ll never see this profit.
  6. Failing to find a program that has a track record of customer satisfaction. The credibility of a product depends on how people view it. If the program has established great relationships with the members of its target market, then it has established a brand which is recognizable for its excellent service. You’ll have a much easier time pre-selling such an affiliate program.
  7. Failing to keep in touch with what’s going on in the industry. There will come a time when the marketing knowledge you hold today will be obsolete. This is especially true in the world of Internet marketing where everything seems to come about very quickly (and leave just as fast). You have to keep yourself updated with current trends, techniques and news in the field to keep your competitive edge.
  8. Failing to invest on knowledge. This is a HUGE mistake that not only people in affiliate marketing make but people doing business on the Internet in general. They fail to actually put forth the money to learn ideas, tactics, and more. This is a huge downfall of many Affiliate marketers because they hope to find the “magic” key for free. It’s important that you buy books, reports and even memberships to sites that will teach you those ideas you wouldn’t otherwise learn. Free information can only take you so far.
  9. Resting on your laurels once you’ve achieved a small amount of success. Success is not eternal. You have to sustain it. If you leave your business alone and don’t do anything to improve upon it or add to it, you’re just setting yourself up for failure.
  10. Believing that affiliate marketing is a “get rich quick” scheme. It most definitely is not. You have to invest a certain amount of commitment, time, financial resources and a whole lot of effort if you really want to realize the many wonderful things that this field of business can give you.

Take these steps to heart and act on them, learn how to become a success instead of just expecting it to come to you.

  2. Hiya, i have seen your site when searching a few weeks ago and i really love the design! I just bought a new 3 character domain (cost me a packet) for a niche review blog, and i was wondering if your design is a free or paid one? I’m new to WordPress and about to set it up, and i would really like to get something with a similar look to yours. Any ideas where i could download or buy something similar? Thanks for your help! :)

  6. Glad I found your site. Your 10 Biggest mistakes is what has kept me on and off and on again for the past 10 years. I’ve been trying my hand in affiliate marketing off and on for that long. The last time I got into it full force was about 3 months ago when I lost my job. It hasn’t been easy, but persitince and determination can make a big difference. Couple that with the realization that it wont happen over night or even in the next 30 days always. Keep at it, and if you enjoy doing it, sooner or later it will pay off. Just dont buy the hype about becoming the next overnight success, take your time and LEARN every day, and you can succeed
