Protect Your Affiliate Links

I’ve just created a *very* quick video on how to protect your affiliate links using PHP.

I created this video because I was pitched a product today that was selling a program that automatically does this for you – for $19.99 or $19.97 … can’t remember really but, it was near $20.

It is so easy to do this yourself that I created a video for you showing you how. I was appalled actually that someone was trying to *sell* you this information.

So here’s how to protect your affiliate commissions from being stolen the *right* way.

P.S. If you can’t quite see the code that is shown in the video, I’ve placed it below for you.

1. Create a web page on your LINUX server that has a .php extension. Doesn’t matter what you name the page, just so long as you can identify it.

2. Within this new page, strip out all excessive code, the html, the body, etc. You don’t need this extra “stuff” in there for what we’re doing.

3. Put the following code on your web page AS IS with the exception of where it says “your affiliate link here”.

4. Be sure you place the ENTIRE URL including the http:// portion of your affiliate link here.

5. Save the file.

6. Point people to this page when recommending your affiliate products.

  2. Hi Kristine ~ I am so glad you did this post … thank you!

I had JUST two days ago did my first redirect page using html.

I just changed it but I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong. If I use a URL like http://www.suzannefranco.com/recommends/example.php and it’s redirecting to an affiliate landing page … it does redirect but once there (landing page) it shows my affilite ID in the URL http://www.affiliateurl.com/?hop=XXXX (XXXX=my affiliate ID). Is this OK? I’ve clicked on links I knew were affiliate links … was redirected … but once there … it was just a plain URL without the affiliate tracking. Which is better and what should I do? Thanks again!!!!!

  4. I gave it a try and it worked on my site. It was really surprisingly easy. Didn’t struggle with it at all.

  8. Some advertising sites have paid the site hosting their link based not on the number of times an original IP visits through the link, but on the number of times the banner ad was “seen.” This method presents a whole host of problems since things like hit counts can be forged and there is no way to insure that just because someone visited a web page that had your logo on it that they even saw it or if they did, that they even knew what it was.

Other methods of affiliate marketing include paying only when a link is followed AND some kind of transaction takes place. This can be tough on the site hosting the link because the attention span of the average Internet user isn’t long enough in most cases to follow a link and then either complete a purchase, or fill out a form of some kind. The conventional method simply pays a host a commission for every time an original IP is directed to their site.

In a matter of only a few years, affiliate marketing has become one of the most cost effective ways to drive traffic to a site. Since, in most cases, both the advertiser and the host profit from the set up, there is no reason to believe that affiliate marketing won’t be a dominant advertising method well into the future.

  10. Maybe you should edit the blog subject title Protect Your Affiliate Links to something more better for your content you create. I liked the blog post still.
